Training lots. Improving little?

When kids bounce between random drills and random feedback, nothing sticks. Real improvement comes from feedback focused on a few Winning Habits during live gameplay, rep after rep.

We Build Winning Habits

At Split Second Basketball we use Guided GameplayGuided GameplayCompetitive, game-like play where coaches use constraints (dribble limits, special scoring rules, advantage/disadvantage situations) to shape behaviour and build habits while players get tons of game-like reps. and Focused FeedbackFocused FeedbackCoaches direct players' attention to the small set of actions and behaviours that have the biggest impact on winning, to change behaviour and build Winning Habits. to direct attention to the most crucial elements of the game. SSB training sessions are designed to be the most fun and efficient way to quickly improve and build Winning Habits.

More Playing, Less Standing

Maximizing competitive game-like reps while holding players accountable to the most important habits leads to quick and dramatic improvement.

  • Guided Gameplay. About 80% of practice is live play against real defenders.
  • Focused Feedback. Coaches direct attention to 1 to 3 habits per practice and give live feedback during rep after rep of gameplay.
  • Fun. Most of every session is live play, so kids get more real reps in an hour and have more fun doing it.

Start Where Your Player Is, Grow From There

Most families start with Skills Training. Players move up when they're ready, and every program teaches the same Winning Habits, so nothing is wasted as they grow.

Starting out? Begin with Skills Training. It's the easiest way to find out where your player fits and get to know us. It's affordable, it's fun, and you don't need to commit to a team.

Not sure where your child fits? Email lesley@splitsecondbasketball.com with their grade and experience, and we'll point you to the right program. Looking for one-on-one work? See Private and Small Group Training.

With You the Whole Way

From a first Skills Training session to high school and beyond, we grow with your child, whatever their goal.

Coaches Who Care

Our coaches grew up in the game and want to pass on what it taught them. They keep improving together through our Professional Development Program, so the same Winning Habits show up in every gym.

What University Coaches Say About Our Players

Since taking over at UBC, Split Second has been one of the clubs I actively recruit from. I find their players to be well prepared to make the jump to post secondary basketball.

Having observed both SSB game and practice settings, it's obvious that the fundamental skills and concepts being taught are exactly those that will translate to higher levels of basketball.

Questions Parents Ask

How do you group players?
Players have the best experience competing against kids close to their own age and skill level. So while we work with boys and girls from Grades 1 to 12, we're thoughtful about every group and avoid putting a wide range of ages and abilities on the court together.
My child is new to basketball. Where should we start?
Skills Training is where most families start. If your child has some experience or a competitive streak, our 3x3 League is another option. There's no evaluation, and they get to play real games. Academy and Cobra teams come next, when they're ready. See Skills Training or See 3x3.
How do you keep kids safe?

Safety is built into everything we do. I spent many years as a firefighter, where keeping people safe was the job, and I brought that with me to Split Second. My own three kids came up through our programs, so I know what it means to drop your child off and trust the people in the gym. Today we have a great crew of coaches who look out for and care for every player, with safety protocols in place. Many come from professions built on trust: teachers, police officers and firefighters still coach with us and play in our weekly adult runs.

How do SSB Evaluations/Tryouts work?
We call them Evaluations for younger players (U10 to U13) and Tryouts for older players (U14 to U18). Either way, your child comes to a couple of sessions with players their own age and competes, mostly in games. Coaches look for a base skill level and a kid who likes to compete, then place them where they'll fit and enjoy it. Spring Evaluations/Tryouts run March 4 to 7, 2027. See Cobra Teams or See Academy Teams.
How long are training sessions?
Most Skills Training sessions run 75 to 90 minutes, with some shorter sessions for younger kids. 3x3 League sessions are 90 minutes, and camps usually run 2.5 to 3 hours a day. Each program lists its schedule before you register. See our programs.
Where are your programs?
We run programs in Vancouver, Richmond and Delta. See our locations.
How much does it cost?
Fees depend on the program and season, and each program shows its price before you register. As a guide, for Winter 2027, Skills Training works out to about $25 an hour and our 3x3 League about $22 an hour, plus GST. For Academy and Cobra team fees, see Academy Teams or Cobra Teams.
How do I register?
Registration is online. Pick a program on our Programs page, or email lesley@splitsecondbasketball.com and we'll help.
